The Friday after the Koobatians arrived, we went to the Lynden Raspberry Festival. This Dutch town is about 17 miles from where we are. They are known for their berries and dairies. We ate lunch at a Dutch bakery, and then had raspberries and ice cream.
Last Saturday, the Koobies had a day of their own while we went to Whidbey Island to spend the day with the kids at the Deception Pass Campground. The kids camped there over the weekend. Be sure to see the cute photo gallery “Deception Pass Camping” linked in the right column. Deception Pass is one of the most beautiful areas of Washington. We also took the Morris’ there during their visit.
Then, on Monday we drove to Port Townsend, taking the ferry from Whidbey Island to get there. Port Townsend is “the town that whiskey built.” In the 19th century it was known for its bars and brothels. Now, it’s a historical area with a Victorian flavor. There were quite a few strange-looking people in the town (at least by our standards)! We visited the shops and toured the Rothschild home. On the way back to the ferry, walking down a residential street, we saw a doe and her fawn in a front yard. They were unafraid, and it was sweet seeing them up so close.
There is a restaurant in Birch Bay called CJ’s Beach House, that has the BEST clam chowder and yeast rolls! We’ve eaten there at least 4 times with the Koobatian’s as John can’t get enough of the chowder. We think, though, we have had our fill! I don’t think we’ve eaten this much clam chowder in a long time.
Today, my mother arrived in Bellingham. She left Fresno Tuesday morning, only stopping to spend the night last night. Pretty amazing for an 82 year-old woman! She will be with us until Tuesday morning. On the way up, she planted shamrocks by the graves of her grandparents in Weed, California. Her grandfather (my great-grandfather) was an Irish immigrant.
Tomorrow, we get the Koobatian’s for most of the day before taking them to the airport to fly back home. Then, we will go to dinner in Bellingham with my mother. This weekend will be busy … and then, in less than 2 weeks, we will be heading back to Fresno.
