COVID 19: May 2022

After several weeks of “flatness,” the Covid cases began climbing again. This is due to SARS COV2 sub-variants that continue to develop and spread. As of the middle of May, Philadelphia (for one) was discussing reinstating mask mandates.

Where We Are

As always, where we might be in the future will be dependent upon individual behavior. This includes vaccination status, considering individual risk for self and others when making decisions, and relying on science and personal doctors for guidance.

It is unknown if Omicron sub-variants are in our future and if so, whether they will be less or more contagious or deadly.

So far, they are more contagious, but not as deadly as prior variants. Not as many people are getting very sick or dying (particularly the vaccinated).

More vaccinated people are getting “breakthrough” COVID. The vaccination means you are 15% less likely to get COVID … and far less likely to get really sick from it. I know elderly people with lots of health issues that have contracted COVID (OMICRON 2) and have not gotten very sick from it (all vaccinated).

It is unknown just how many people have been infected. Case counts are inaccurate. This is because people can test at home, not report, or they can get it and believe they have a cold or allergies.

My nephew is currently on his third “round” of COVID (unvaccinated). He hasn’t gotten very sick from it … so far.

It is unknown when we will get to a post-pandemic phase or “herd immunity” situation, due to having enough vaccinated people and enough people that are immune due to infection.

It is unknown whether we will EVER be rid of COVID. It may be with us indefinitely. Why? Because of variants. As long as we don’t have immunity that blocks transmission, COVID is one step ahead of us. We are always playing catch-up, as the variants are ahead of our ability to “be ready” for new infections. The wolf is still outside the hen house, so to speak.

It is unknown just how long that false information, misinformation, conspiracy theories, etc., will continue to influence people’s individual behavior.

Trying not to have negative thoughts … but this is the overall picture at the moment.

COVID is not the Major Headline Anymore

We have been stricken with other news items, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, two significant mass shootings, the anticipated SCOTUS overturn of Roe VS Wade, and mid-term elections (just to name a few).

And … people are tired of COVID. Many people are moving on, and don’t care anymore if they get it. One in 6 will never get the vaccine. And … this will increase the likelihood of variants and additional infection.

And So …this month’s post is shorter.

We will see …..
